Year 5 – Problem Solving and Building Confidence

Year 5 maths teaching techniques at Eleanor Primary School Thanks to headteacher and maths co-ordinator Kate Frood and her team, pupils at Eleanor Palmer Primary in north London achieve well above average National Test results in maths.

Kate has a great personal enthusiasm for maths, which she communicates, throughout the school, from ‘maths mentions’ in assembly, to lunchtime ‘Card Schools’ and other maths games for pupils. Once a week she teaches Year 5 and we see her putting them through an intense session of number-based problem solving. This helps pupils build on the mathematical knowledge they have and to develop genuine mathematical agility – and to genuinely enjoy maths.
