CPD for Teachers – Secondary Peer Observation

A look at peer observation in St Thomas Moore High School Encouraged to take the initiative for their own CPD, staff at St Thomas More R C High School believe peer observation can be a successful method of developing and improving their teaching practice.

The programme follows Chris observing his head of department Christine, to look for new strategies and techniques to use with his class. This change of emphasis from critical inspection of the observed to the discovery of new ideas on the part of the observee has helped staff overcome any initial nerves about the project.

The programme also looks at how an observation can benefit both parties involved, how to overcome some of the obvious challenges such as finding time, and how when the observed goes on to become the observer, can help establish trust and allow ideas to flow across departments.
